Want to cover Vermont government?

Get paid to write about Vermont politics and government through Community News Service’s legislative journalism program this coming spring.

This internship, part of CAS 3922 B, is for aspiring journalists interested in writing about Vermont legislators and the issues facing citizens — and getting published across the state. 

Our three-person team last spring wrote over 40 stories, which appeared at least 113 times across 16 news outlets around Vermont. Your work will have impact across the state.

Along with six required credits and a journalism portfolio, you’ll earn a stipend across the semester. Applications are due Thursday, Nov. 14. 

Interns report on committee meetings, interview legislators and state officials and write articles about what’s going on in the Statehouse.

You’ll build sources involved in every part of policymaking: advocates and lobbyists, government officials, legislators and everyday citizens impacted by laws. We especially like to cover stories that fall between the cracks of traditional media — or find new ways to explore those stories and the people behind them. 

Students will work with a professional editor from Community News Service — UVM’s journalism internship program, part of the new Center for Community News — and be expected to spend around 20 hours a week with the program. CNS interns, including those who’ve belonged to this team, have used their experiences here to get jobs as newspaper, radio and TV journalists, work as communications professionals or go into the government or nonprofit fields.
